In this conversation, she shares her journey with poetry, her inspirations, and the creative process behind her work.
1. What draws you to poetry, and how do you think it serves as a unique medium for expressing emotions and ideas?
My love for poetry began during my school days, particularly in English classes, where I was fascinated by how poetry could convey profound meanings in just a few words. I believe the rhythm of poetry plays a crucial role in intensifying emotions and reinforcing ideas, making it even more impactful for readers. Poetic devices such as alliteration, personification, repetition, and rhyming schemes contribute to a comprehensive and engaging experience, helping readers fully absorb the poet’s intended message.
2. What themes inspire your poetry, and how do they influence its tone and structure?
The poems in Verses cover a wide spectrum of themes, including love, friendship, family, work, self-care, and introspection, among others. I write about both reality and imagination—sometimes inspired by dreams, stories, or simple observations. The essence of my poetry often stems from my personal perspective on an experience or emotion, which I then transform into words for readers to connect with. The tone and structure of each poem vary depending on the theme, making each piece distinct in its expression.
3. Poetry allows readers to interpret and connect with it in their own way. How do you ensure that your intended meaning is conveyed while leaving room for personal interpretation?
I focus on universal themes that readers can relate to, ensuring a sense of connection across diverse audiences. My poetry incorporates metaphors and open-ended scenarios, blending my thoughts with enough ambiguity for readers to interpret the verses through their own lens. This balance allows each individual to engage with my work in a way that aligns with their personal experiences and emotions.
4. How do you create the melodic quality in your poetry, and how does it enhance the reader’s experience?
When composing a poem, I experiment with different approaches to create rhythm—ranging from freestyle verses to structured formats like sonnets. I adjust rhyme schemes and line lengths depending on the theme to alter the poem’s flow, ensuring that the rhythm enhances the emotions I wish to convey. These variations in structure help shape the reader’s experience, making the poetry more dynamic and immersive.
5. Many poets draw inspiration from their personal experiences. How do the themes and imagery in your poetry reflect your background and journey?
My poetry is a creative expression of everything I feel, see, imagine, observe, and experience. I infuse my own perspective into each piece, allowing my personal emotions to shape the themes I explore. Some of my works also challenge conventional ideas—for instance, Orb of Night presents the moon in a negative light, a departure from its traditionally positive portrayal in poetry. Through such pieces, I aim to bring a fresh perspective while staying true to my emotions.
6. How do your personal experiences and observations influence your poetic imagery?
The process of crafting a poem often involves drawing from everyday observations, interweaving thoughts and emotions into a meaningful narrative. My poetry is not just influenced by my own experiences but also by books, films, conversations, cultural norms, and beliefs. I strive to create imagery that is vivid yet open to interpretation, allowing readers to visualize and connect with the poetry in their own unique ways.
7. Can you share any specific writing routines or creative exercises that help refine your poetry and enhance your imagination?
Beyond the joy of expressing my thoughts in a poetic form, I continuously experiment with different techniques—varying rhyme patterns, poetic devices, and rhythms. For instance, I attempted to write a Christmas carol in a poetic format, experimenting with musicality in my verses. I also try to maintain a balance between poetic structure and intuitive expression, ensuring that my work remains accessible and resonant with readers. My writing process is spontaneous—I capture ideas as they come and refine them until they feel complete. However, if a verse carries raw emotions in its initial form, I sometimes choose to leave it unedited to preserve its authenticity. Some of my poems are written based on specific themes, while others emerge naturally from the emotions I am experiencing at that moment.
