Breaking Barriers: Richa Kar and the Rise of Zivame

With each passing day, this world is becoming more modern than before. But when it comes to being modern for women, this pace seems to slow down a bit. Even today, when women go to the shop to buy sanitary napkins and undergarments for themselves, they feel shy to even mention its name.

Richa Kar had been seeing this problem of women since childhood, that is why she decided that women should not have any problem in buying the most important thing for their body. For this, she started the business of selling undergarments online and due to this she had to face many problems.

Who is Richa Kar?

Richa was born on 17 July 1980 in a middle class family of Jamshedpur. She completed her graduation from BITS Pilani and then started working in a company in Bangalore. While doing her job, Richa noticed that women feel so shy while buying undergarments that they are unable to even say what they like or dislike. There are usually men in the shops, so buying undergarments becomes even more embarrassing for them.

Richa’s goal was to eliminate the embarrassment of women

Understanding this, Richa thought of creating a platform where women can buy undergarments of their choice with complete comfort. To start this business, Richa first had to face opposition from her mother. When she told her family that she wanted to do a business of selling undergarments online, her father could not understand what kind of work she was talking about. At the same time, her mother said that what will I answer to my friends and relatives that my daughter sells bras and panties.

Even after this opposition, Richa did not give up and continued her campaign to convince her family for this business. Apart from convincing the family, another big problem she faced was to raise funds for the business. She took help from her friends and invested her savings in this business, in which her mother also helped her. With everyone’s help, she collected 35 lakh rupees and started the business. Another problem came when it was not possible to do business from the job, so Richa left her good job for this business.

Started business by putting career at stake

She also had to face a lot of criticism for the decision to leave the job. Even when she went to see a place for her office, she did not tell anyone for which business she wanted to take the office because everyone was either laughing at her business idea or looking down upon it. After so many difficulties, finally in the year 2011, she started her business with the name Zivame.com.

Richa launched an online service called Zivame where women can buy undergarments of their choice and size without any shame at home. Initially, this business did not work much, but as the internet and technology grew, Zivame’s business kept growing. Today, this platform has more than 5 thousand lingerie styles, more than 50 brands and undergarments in more than 100 sizes for women. Along with this, this platform also provides try at home and fitting consultant.

Understanding the problems of women, the company that Richa Kar started after fighting with everyone, its market value has reached 749 crores today. In the year 2014 itself, Richa’s name has been included in Fortune India’s “Under 40” list. Richa Kar’s success has become an inspiration for women across the country today.
