1.What specifically qualified you to write this book, and what life experiences or knowledge do you bring to the subject?
I got the feedback from my patients and acquaintances of the need for a good book that explained what the Human body looks like, and how it works. They wanted it written in a simple language that was easily understood. Since I have been writing Health books and Fiction since 2000, and practicing as a consultant in medicine for 45 years, I felt I was equipped to do this.
- Could you give a brief synopsis of your work and how it tackles the most important issues facing the modern world?
Human Body Inside Out is a comprehensive resource that promises to elevate the reader’s understanding of the intricate workings of the human body and a practical guide that empowers readers with actionable knowledge, enabling them to make informed decisions about their health
It is also a valuable asset for Paramedical health workers like Physiotherapists and Nurses, and even medical practitioners seeking a comprehensive, and readily available reference book.
I have endeavored to interweave anatomy (structure), physiology (functions), and disease to provide the reader with a holistic understanding of the body. Every organ and system has been explored, including the human mind, which remains largely enigmatic, not only to the general public but also to us doctors. Molecular biology— delving into the cellular, atomic, and genetic structure of the body, has also been included, catering to the interests of well-informed readers who seek to comprehend the body at the microscopic level. Few subjects can rival the complexity of the human body. The more one learns about it, the deeper the fascination grows. It is so intricately designed that no single individual can claim to fully fathom it within a lifetime. However, I have tried to present it in an easily comprehensible manner. The human body can be likened to a fully automated machine consisting of numerous organ systems. Each system possesses its own unique functions but relies on the support of other organ systems to operate effectively. While the brain and heart may be recognized as crucial, they wouldn’t function without the kidneys, lungs, and liver. In fact, every cell in the body is self-contained. Our bodies can be influenced by factors beyond our control. For instance, consider the impact of certain inherited genes that lead to conditions like short stature, obesity, cancer, diabetes, and hypertension—unfortunate, but not of our making. Environmental factors and upbringing also play a significant role in shaping our bodies, for better or worse. To illustrate, imagine ten individuals sitting on the banks of the Ganges releasing lit oil lamps into the river simultaneously. Each lamp has subtle variations in weight, oil content, and wick size (inherited genetic traits), affecting how they move in the water. Furthermore, environmental factors like water turbulence, unexpected waves, obstructions in the water, or gusts of wind can alter the course of these lamps. Some may follow a straight path, others deviate to the side, and some are extinguished quickly, while the most unfortunate ones capsize. This analogy mirrors our lives, as we are born with certain genetic advantages and disadvantages that can be modified or influenced by a plethora of environmental factors, including our home environment, friends, associates, and the lifestyles we adopt. It is clear that disease can afflict us due to the conscious decisions we make as well as due to unforeseen circumstances beyond our control, such as unfavorable genetic traits or adverse environmental factors. I have endeavored to keep the book concise, and have included numerous illustrations to make it engaging and accessible.
In a rapidly changing world, and our busy lifestyles, it is increasingly becoming difficult to manage our health. Health books like Human Body Inside Out, can play a big role in disease prevention and management, by equipping us with Scientific knowledge on Health.
- Could you list a few of the most important lessons or revelations that readers should anticipate from your book?
I certainly hope readers will be impacted in the following way—–
- They will learn to respect and take care of this beautiful creation called the Human Body that has evolved over a period of 4 billion years.
- They will understand the importance of prevention to postpone Lifestyle diseases.
- Use the book as a ready reckoner to understand a disease before and when it strikes.
- Which of your book’s case studies or real-world examples best exemplify the concepts you discuss?
For example, in the chapter on Heart, I have given the example of two cases. One, where a single doctor called in an emergency for a heart attack, could not save the patient, And the second, where another patient, immediately rushed to hospital was saved. I have highlighted this example with the quote—‘In an emergency, call an ambulance, not a doctor!’
I have stressed on the importance of REGULARITY in eating, sleeping, exercising, testing in management of Lifestyle diseases like Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity and Cardiovascular problems.
In the chapter on Bronchial asthma, I have highlighted that if an asthmatic turns blue—RUSH him to hospital.
I have highlighted the impact of stress and insomnia on disease creation
In the chapter on Constipation, I have highlighted that if you ignore the early morning urge to defecate called mass reflex, you can end up with chronic constipation leading to its complications like Piles, Fissure, Hernia and Fistula.
These are just a few examples.
- When creating this book, did you face any special difficulties or barriers? If so, how did you get beyond them?
It has taken me 12 years to write this book. I have had to accumulate a lot of material and put it together in simple language that is easily understood. Since I had to write about the full body, it was obviously not an easy task. By taking time and doing it slowly, it became feasible.
- What benefits do you think readers will derive from your work, and how will it positively affect their lives in your opinion?
Any reader wanting to know about a particular part or the full body, can pick up my book and gain more than a basic amount of knowledge. Gaining scientific knowledge is being self-armed against disease and will certainly have a positive effect on their overall health and well-being.
- In an ever-evolving world, how can a book remain current and flexible for readers throughout time?
Yes, that is a question relevant to any health book. Knowledge of the Human body is growing at a phenomenal rate, especially with the advent of AI. But by and large, basic Anatomy and Physiology will continue to remain the same. However, like my other health books I do intend to revise and update this book too once in 5 years to continue to keep it relevant.
