The BIMSTEC region, home to more than 1.7 billion people and a combined GDP exceeding $5 trillion, stands among the world’s most vibrant and strategically significant geographies. Rich in Buddhist and Hindu civilizational heritage, this region represents not only cultural depth but also immense economic promise. Yet despite its demographic advantage and developmental potential, BIMSTEC nations continue to grapple with political instability, brain drain, and geopolitical complexities. At a time when this region has one of the world’s youngest populations, the need for empowered young leaders has never been more urgent.
Recognizing this critical moment, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and the Art of Living have identified BIMSTEC as a priority region for transformative leadership development. With a long-term vision of fostering future changemakers, they have initiated a strategic roadmap centered on youth empowerment, emotional resilience, and regional cooperation.
On April 25, 2026, the Art of Living, in collaboration with India’s Ministry of External Affairs, launched the six-day BIMSTEC Youth Leadership Exchange Program in Bengaluru. More than just an event, this initiative reflects Gurudev’s enduring commitment to cultivating a new generation of ethical leaders. The program brings together emerging youth leaders and policy practitioners from BIMSTEC member countries and serves as the foundation for a three-to-four-month mentorship journey. Guided jointly by the Art of Living and the Ministry of External Affairs, the program seeks to transform innovative ideas into impactful grassroots action.
At its core, BIMSTEC’s future depends on building authentic bridges of trust rooted in its shared history and collective aspirations. Inspired by the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family — the exchange program aims to identify promising young leaders and equip them with holistic personal development tools. By focusing on emotional intelligence, inner wellbeing, and inclusivity, the initiative emphasizes that meaningful leadership begins with self-awareness and service to humanity.
Addressing the participants, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar urged young leaders to unlock their inner strength and take ownership of the region’s future. He highlighted that just as BIMSTEC’s vast potential remains underleveraged due to limited regional trade and connectivity, individuals too often fail to realize their own untapped capabilities. Through self-discovery and inner transformation, youth can become catalysts for broader societal progress.
The leadership framework of the program is built around four strategic pillars: conflict resolution, entrepreneurship and innovation, navigating modern disruptions such as AI, and leveraging culture and heritage to strengthen regional ties. This multidimensional approach ensures that future leaders are prepared not only to solve contemporary challenges but also to preserve and promote the region’s shared identity.
By integrating seva (selfless service) with leadership development, the Art of Living is nurturing changemakers who lead with empathy, consensus, and compassion. In a region blessed with abundant resources, agricultural wealth, and ambitious youth, the barriers to prosperity are often internal as much as external. Gurudev’s vision addresses this gap by championing a leadership model grounded in clarity, resilience, and compassion.
With nearly 60% of BIMSTEC’s population under the age of 35, the region stands at a defining crossroads. This is a pivotal opportunity to redefine leadership through empowered youth who can guide BIMSTEC toward sustainable prosperity. Through initiatives like the Youth Leadership Exchange Program, the Art of Living is not merely preparing leaders—it is helping shape the future of an entire region from within.
