India’s CNG Growth: Where Does Your State Stand?

The government is engaged in expanding the CNG network in the country. In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament on this matter, the figures of CNG stations of all the states have been presented. It has revealed in which states the maximum number of CNG stations have been established so far. At the same time, which state has the least number of CNG stations. Minister of State in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gop has said in his written reply that a total of 6,861 CNG stations have been set up across the country till March 31, 2024.

The government has informed that under the PNGRB Act, 2006, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) is trying to further expand the network of CNG in different cities of India in collaboration with various institutions.

These states have the most CNG stations

According to the data presented by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Uttar Pradesh is at the top among the three states in India where the maximum number of CNG stations have been established. The total number of CNG stations here is 1,081. Gujarat is at number two where the total number of CNG stations is 1,017. Maharashtra comes in third place where a total of 964 CNG stations have been established.

The number of CNG stations has increased in four years

To promote clean energy in India, the central government is constantly trying to increase the number of CNG stations in the states. Its effect is also visible in the last four years, the number of CNG stations has increased almost three times. In the year 2020, there were a total of 2,188 CNG stations across the country, which increased to 3,094 in 2021. In 2022, a total of 4,433 CNG stations have been established in India. At the same time, there were 5,665 CNG stations till 2023, which has increased to 6,861 in 2024. The central government is trying to establish 18,336 CNG stations across the country by the year 2032. The government is continuously working for this.

This state has the least number of CNG stations

Uttar Pradesh is the state in the country with the highest number of CNG stations, while the union territory which has only one CNG station so far is Jammu and Kashmir. For the first time in the year 2024, a CNG station has been established in the state. Apart from this, 5 CNG stations have been established in Puducherry, 6 in Tripura and Daman and Diu. In terms of area, Delhi has the highest number of 491 CNG stations.
